Why it is worth the trip

Sar-e-Sang has supplied the lapis lazuli used in jewellery and pigment for several thousand years, which is why it appears in almost every account of gemstone origin.

Before you go

Listed here only to record that it is not a visitable experience. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to Afghanistan without exception, states that there is no British Embassy in Afghanistan and that it cannot give in-person consular assistance, and warns of a high risk of British nationals being detained or kidnapped.
