Umoona Opal Mine & Museum
Descend into original mine workings dating from the 1920s with a local guide, and walk a free underground museum covering opal formation, mining history and Aboriginal cultural heritage with a documentary shown in an underground cinema.
The visit
Why it is worth the trip
Opal forms and is judged differently from crystalline gems, and seeing the seams underground explains why body tone and play of colour are described the way they are.
Before you go
The site states that the museum is free and open daily 8:30am to 5:30pm, that guided tours run at 10am, 2pm and 4pm, and that the underground stays at a constant 22 to 24 degrees Celsius year round. Dogs and pets are not permitted; service animals may be accommodated by prior arrangement.
