Australia defined the world opal trade for more than a century and remains its reference origin, while its sapphire fields in Queensland and New South Wales supply the market with dependable dark blues, parti colours and fancy stones. Few origins combine a luxury phenomenon gem and a workhorse corundum trade in one country.

The opal fields

Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of black opal, the most valuable form of the gem, mined from shallow shafts in ground that has changed little in a century of digging. Coober Pedy in South Australia produces the greater volume in white and crystal opal, with Mintabie and Andamooka nearby, while the Queensland fields yield boulder opal in which precious material remains attached to its ironstone host. Buying at the fields is a culture of its own, and much fine rough still changes hands locally before cutting.

Sapphire country

The New England fields around Inverell and the gemfields of central Queensland produce sapphire in commercial quantity, most of it heated to clarify and strengthen colour. Australian parti coloured stones, split between blue, green and yellow, have moved from curiosity to design staple.

Treatments and disclosure

Solid natural opal is untreated, and the matters requiring disclosure are assembly and provenance: doublets and triplets must be declared as such, and matrix treatments on Andamooka material stated plainly. Sapphire follows the usual heat conventions.
